The new Email List feature has "behavior" that is very similar to the Email Lists you were using before the Yahoo/Gmail/AOL issue occurred.
The one big difference is the FROM address. The FROM address used to be
- <email list address> on behalf of <original sender's email address>
- Keeping the FROM address as the original sender is no longer possible as it causes email to be rejected after we "relay" it.
- Email Lists will now send all email FROM the listadm@ address on your site.
- The original sender will be placed in the TO field of the email so your members can easily see where it came from.
Here are full details of how the new Email Lists will work:
FROM: “Display Text” listadm@<your domain name>
- “Display Text” can be configured at Admin/Email/List Settings/Email Lists.
- “Display Text” will default to “Pack|Troop Email”.
- listadm@<your domain name> is a new email alias that forwards to the email address at Admin/Email/List Settings/Email Lists.
- All email list emails will come “from” this address.
TO: <original sender’s email address>
- To help show where the email came FROM originally, the original sender’s email address will be shown in the TO field.
- No other email address will display in the TO field to help make it clear where it came from.
CC: TO and CC email addresses from the original email
- Any email addresses contained in the TO or CC field of the original email, will be displayed in the CC field of the new email.
- If the Email List address was originally in the TO/CC fields, it will display in the CC field of the new message.
- If the Email List address was originally in the BCC field, it will NOT display in the CC field.
- Note: The SOAR Email List does not deliver to these other individual addresses. That is done when the email first goes out from the sender. This is just for display purposes to see who the email went to.
Subject: [listname] <original email Subject>
- As before the Subject of the email will be prepended with the listname
There are more email “headers” underneath that will create the following behavior that you are used to
- Reply
- Will go back to the original sender’s email address.
- Just like the behavior of the original Email Lists.
- Reply All
- Will go back to the original sender’s email address AND any other email address in the TO/CC field of the original email.
- If the Email List address was in the TO/CC originally, Reply All will go back to the Email List.
- If the Email List address as in the BCC originally, Reply All will NOT go back to the Email List.
- Bounce messages
- Will go back to listadm@<domain name> which will forward the email address at Admin/Email/List Settings/Email Lists
- Same behavior as before, just an email alias to make it work properly now
- New Feature
- If the sender’s FROM address is listed in your website ROSTER as an Active member, but they are not authorized to send to the specific list, they will get an email back stating they are not authorized.
- Previously this was only true if the FROM address was a member of the list.
- Maximum Recipients
- To help prevent accidental spam from within, Email Lists will not process any email that has more than 20 email addresses in the TO and CC fields.
- Each Email List address counts as 1 email address, does not matter how many members are part of the Email List.
- In the examples below the email address count is 4.
- Maximum Size
- The maximum size of an email to an Email List is 6MB.
- This is the same as before.
